Introduction to Computer Applications
Room 210
Introduction to Computer Applications is a beginner’s level computer course taught on PC equipment. Software applications include: Microsoft Office Professional Edition of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Related Microsoft Windows/Desktop activities are provided on the latest version available. Intranet and Internet application activities coincide with the present networked system. Intro to Computer Applications is a full year, one credit course required for students in grade 9.
Classroom Policies and Procedures
All food, candy, drink, and GUM is prohibited in classroom. Students who violate this rule will be assigned one (1) detention with teacher.
Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the late bell rings. Students not in their seat will be considered tardy. Disciplinary action will be taken for students who have excessive tardiness.
Students are to remain in their assigned seat during the entire period. DO NOT slide your chair around the room to socialize. We have minimum space to move around our room. This type of horseplay could result in a student’s computer being unplugged and loosing work they have completed. Students who choose to slide around in their seats will be assigned three (3) detentions with teacher.
Talking during lecture or when a peer is asking a question is rude and is unacceptable class room behavior! Please raise your hand to ask a question.
Tampering with equipment will not be tolerated. Each student is responsible for the equipment at their assigned seat. Disciplinary action will be taken for students who choose to tamper with equipment. Tampering, to mention a few examples, would include removing the ball from a mouse, unplugging wires and cords, pressing any keys on another student’s keyboard. Equipment tampering infractions will result in three (3) detentions with teacher. Students who have damaged equipment will be sent to the office with a discipline referral.
Students are only to use the following software in our class: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Other programs that are automatically loaded on the computer are off limits. Students who violate this rule will be assigned five (5) detentions with teacher.
Students are not permitted to use the Internet or play ANY games on the computers. Any student who chooses to ignore this class room rule will be assigned five (5) detentions with teacher.
EXCEPTION: On occasion, I will assign an Internet activity that will be graded. With teacher’s prior permission students may work on another teacher’s assignment when our class work is completed.
ABSENCES
When absent from class, it is your responsibility to ask for assignment missed. If absent from class due to an extra-curricular event, you must inquire about your lesson prior to being absent. Upon your return to class, you are to complete the current day’s lesson. Any missed work needs to be completed during study hall or after school (2:30-3:00).
All computer assignments must be completed in our classroom because we are working from the district network.
ASSIGNMENTS
An answer key will be provided for all assignments that will be collected. It will be located on the shelf top at the front of the class room. It is your responsibility to check the key with your assignment before submitting your work. If at any time, you have difficulty with an assignment, please let me know. I am here to help you succeed in this class. I can not stress enough the importance of checking the key for your assignments!
Please make certain you complete your assignments by the due date. If you need additional time to complete an assignment, please make arrangements to complete work before the due date.
You will be given several days advance notice for due dates.
I do not give extra credit assignments.
BINDER CHECKS
Students are required to purchase a one-inch binder and four tab dividers for class. You are expected to bring your binder and a pen/pencil daily to class. Periodic binder checks will be held to ensure students are bringing their binders to class and taking notes when required.
Binder checks will be random. Points will be given for binder checks.
Lesson notes must be in student’s binder to receive points. No partial points will be awarded for notes not secured in student’s binder. Students MUST have binder in their possession during class the day of the check or they will receive a ZERO for that binder check. Students will not be permitted to retrieve their binder from lockers, classrooms, home, etc. Binders with notes must be in class with student to receive credit—ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS! Students who are absent the day of a binder check will have a binder check upon their return to class.
If you choose to “lend” your notes to another student, and he/she is absent from class the day of a binder check, you will receive a zero for your binder check. With this in mind, please understand the risk you are taking if this student is absent or leaves your notes at his/her house.
Again, I do not give extra credit. Binder checks are my way of rewarding you for keeping on task in class and doing what you are expected to do.
CHEATING
Cheating is unacceptable. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for the assignment. Students who “share” their work with another student will also receive a zero for the assignment. Cheating is academic dishonesty and could result in failing the course.
DETENTION
Students who are assigned detention are expected to serve their detention in a timely manner (within one week of the infraction).
Students are permitted to ride the elementary bus home after detention (secure a bus pass from me).
Students who fail to serve a scheduled detention will be assigned an additional detention for “no show”. Exception: a student reschedules the assigned detention with teacher prior to 2:30 PM the day of the assigned detention or you are absent from school on the scheduled day.
HOMEWORK
Homework is not assigned in our class. The only exception is for notes not completed during allotted class time. If you were absent or did not complete your notes, you must sign out a textbook to complete your notes at home.
NO GUM
There is a strict “NO GUM” policy in our class room. I need to enforce this rule so that equipment is not damaged. There are neon “NO GUM” signs posted throughout the class room to remind you. Reminder, you will be assigned one (1) detention if you choose to chew gum.
QUIZZES/TESTS
Quiz & test questions will be taken directly from your notes—word for word! Several days advance notice will be given for quiz/test dates. If you are absent the day of a quiz/test, you will be expected to take quiz/test upon your return to class.
I have outlined policies, procedures, and expectations for our class. By coming to class prepared and ready to work, I am certain you will succeed in class.
I truly am looking forward to working with each of you this school year, not only as your teacher, but your freshman advisor as well. You will be given information letters for your freshman fundraisers and activities as soon as I receive school board approval for the dates for these events.
Ms. Diehl
Your first binder check will be on Tuesday, September 4. Please shop for your binder and tab dividers over the weekend.
